What’s Your Sign? Here’s How You Should Furnish Your Backyard According to the Zodiac
There may be a backyard makeover in the stars for you.
Some of us like clean, sleek lines. Others of us prefer a riot of color. Why? Who knows. There’s no accounting for taste and the alignment of the stars is as good an explanation as any other. Finding a decor vibe can be challenging, and sometimes it takes an out-there idea to get the ball rolling. So whether you’re a longtime astrologer or a skeptic, take a moment to consider what the Zodiac has to say about how you should be setting up your outdoor rooms.
How to Decorate If Your Sign Is….
Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 19)
Dramatic, bold, and assured, Aries understand the appeal of mid-century modern design. The clean, sharp lines and bright, saturated colors speak to the rams’ direct and even audacious nature. White outdoor furniture also reflects the blind optimism of the sign. Who else has the confidence that it’ll stay spotless outside? Aries loves the flicker of a flame, so consider an outdoor fireplace. Keep things spirited and playful with an outdoor rug in hot colors like fuchsia and orange. And make plenty of room for entertaining a crowd, because Aries are always excellent hosts.
Taurus (Apr 20 – May 20)
Warm colors inspired by dusty landscapes and glowing sunsets appeal to the most earthbound of all of the signs—Taurus. Planet-friendly accessories, like solar-powered lanterns, and environmentally sensitive patio furniture also appeal to their socially conscious nature. (Yardbird makes their outdoor collections with recycled materials which can also, in turn, be recycled at the end of their usefulness, meaning that their furniture won’t live on in a landfill if you ever have to part with it.) Because Taurus has never met a pretty thing they didn’t like, pool-friendly dinnerware in organic shapes and pillows woven with sunset shades are a must.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
Shape-shifting, curious Geminis may be drawn to seating that lets them change their perspective, like hanging basket- or swivel chairs, set up in pairs (because, you know, twins). Create comfortable corners with soft textures like sheepskin (which should be stored inside when they’re not used) that are perfect for socializing on long summer nights. Bold colors and fun patterns appeal to the sign’s famously playful side.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Cancers are energy sponges. To create a peaceful and quiet outdoor space for socializing, consider a group of Adirondack chairs arranged for both conversation and personal space. Everyone has a place to sit, and a little buffer from their companions. You’ll be happier that way. Trust.
Leo (July 23 – Aug 22)
Forgive us for being literal, but a savanna-inspired patio for a Leo is a cool idea. A lawn-free landscape is a dramatic backdrop for natural materials like rattan, paper, and ceramic tile with a mossy green glaze. A chair with a high back is a fitting perch for the zodiac’s most notorious attention seekers. A long table with stools or benches and a throne at either end for the host leaves no question who’s the center of the action. Leos love luxury, and creating an outdoor den with luxe safari vibes—including a boho print rug and romantic lighting—wouldn’t be overkill.
Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22)
Organized, disciplined, and delightfully predictable, Virgos are what the world needs to make sure everything goes back to its rightful place—including patio furniture. Clean lines and easy maintenance are a priority for these perfectionists, who are more than happy to avoid flashier details and look-at-me color. There’s nothing like a matching patio set and plenty of shade to make a Virgo sigh with relief. Subtle, orderly patterns for rugs, pillows, and textiles also appeal to the most sensible of signs.
Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22)
Lively Libras love to mix it up, both socially and with fun, whimsical design ideas. Too indecisive to pick one style or theme? No problem. This sign is all about balance, and a mix-and-match group of pretty sculptural chairs can keep a patio from looking too staged or stodgy. Sunny yellow and cool blue make for a cheerful, light-hearted color palette that keeps things on the bright side, and appeals to a Libra’s optimism.
Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21)
A snug sectional sofa, fiery color, and boho accessories with global influences come together to create a layered outdoor den enticing enough for Scorpios. Treat an outdoor room like you would an interior, laying down a texture rug and adding soft accessories like kilim-inspired poufs and pillows. Scorpios like to curl up and go deep into conversation, so the more intimate the furniture arrangement the better. Take it a step further and set up a backyard yurt or a curtained cabana to burrow deep into an escape from the outside world.
Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Create a space for people to gather around, pour a few drinks, and listen to those witty Sag stories about travel and adventure. Anyone so magnetic and assured should be ready for a revolving door of backyard guests, so consider outdoor bar tables and stools to keep things light and lively. String lights make people feel like they’ve stumbled into a lively cafe, which is where the zodiac’s archers feel most at home.
Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
Earthy Capricorns appreciate the classic good taste of rattan and wicker, nothing too flashy. A well-made, practical outdoor fabric that stands the test of time is always a good idea. Sensible stripes, traditional florals, and straightforward color schemes appeal to the no-nonsense goats. If it ain’t broke, Caps don’t want to fix it. This time-tested style has staying power for a reason—it’s beautiful, easy to maintain, and can work in any climate.
Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
Brainy Aquarians exercise their good judgment by investing in comfortable, versatile, well-made sofas and sectionals that will stand the test of time, but they do it their way. Black, white, and gray might seem like an unexpected palette for outside spaces, but deep-thinking rebels don’t have time for frills. These water and wisdom-bearers like to do the right thing, and they know how best to use H2O: Save on a low-maintenance landscape and indulge in a fountain. Soothing water sounds create an atmosphere for contemplation and exchanging big ideas.
Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
While Pisces can’t be described as low-maintenance, give them a pretty place to escape the chaos of the outside world, lie down, and spend some quality time and they’ll be happy. A simple daybed with (impractical but lovely, in true fish fashion) pale blue upholstery and decorative pillows would do the trick. But if a dreamy cabana with flowy cotton curtains is an option, the choice seems obvious. Some seating for a few hand-picked guests, and a place to rest—and refill— a drink are musts.
