There are still plenty of bottled options if you didn’t bring your own

SFO Bans Plastic Bottles
Courtesy of San Francisco International Airport

San Francisco International Airport is now prohibiting the sale of purified, carbonated or sparkling water, mineral water, and electrolyte enhanced water in plastic bottles under one liter, as of August 20. That means that all SFO shops, restaurants, vending machines, and lounges will now be limited to sales of in glass, recyclable aluminum, or compostable bottles.

It’s a move in keeping with the airport’s goal of reaching zero waste to landfill status by 2021; all single-use containers are now required to be compostable. And in a citywide move towards sustainability, San Francisco’s ban on plastic, single-use straws went into effect on July 1, 2019.

According to SFO, over 10,000 bottles of water are sold at the airport each day; less than 25 percent of plastic bottles are recycled, making for a large impact on landfill waste. But, while a step in the right direction, it’s still skimming the surface: Sales of sodas, teas, and juices in plastic bottles are still allowed, as well as water in containers with a volume above one liter.

The best move: Bring a reusable water bottle that can be refilled at one of the airport’s many hydration stations; there are over 100 scattered throughout all terminals. But for those sans water bottle, the airport still allows the sale of fan favorites like Topo Chico and Aqua Panna (glass bottles), La Croix (recyclable aluminum can), and PathWater (reusable aluminum bottles).
