How did you do reading-wise this year? Did you hit your book goals? Or are you still planning on adding “read more” to your 2024 resolutions? Whatever the case, we can agree that it was another exciting year for new releases. There was clever fiction reads, exciting mysteries and thrillers, swoon-worth romances, thought-provoking nonfiction, and buzzy memoirs.

To help us look back at the year in reading, Goodreads announced their 2023 Goodreads Choice Award winners, that had members voting on the best books of 2023. Over 5.8 million votes were cast this year, so people had a lot of opinions on their favorites!

This year, a new category was added: romantasy. The Goodreads editorial team told us: “The romantasy genre melds the epic world-building and high stakes of traditional fantasy novels with subplots featuring a strong love story and familiar romance tropes. We saw this genre truly explode in popularity this year with the publication of Fourth Wing, a romantasy bestseller featuring a deadly dragonrider academy that Goodreads members (and readers everywhere) just couldn’t get enough of!”
