Interest in the perfect matcha powder has skyrocketed ever since the early days of the pandemic, when coffee shops closed and people had to get creative. I’ve been making matcha at home since the isolation times of 2020—and Mizuba Matcha has become a must-have in my routine. Not only does it save you the daily $6 (at least) at your favorite café, but it lets you whisk up your favorite matcha flavors—offering a daily reset and a taste of traditional matcha, right in your own kitchen.

Meet Mizuba

Founded by tea expert Lauren Purvis, Mizuba Tea Co. is a woman-owned company rooted in tradition and based right in the heart of the West. With offices in both Santa Barbara, California, and Portland, Oregon, you’ll likely find Mizuba used by your favorite cafés.

Purvis’ passion for tea began as early as age 11. Raised in Santa Barbara’s lively food-and-wine scene, she grew up entranced by tea’s flavor variety. By college, she was hosting tea parties in her dorm room with her friends. Her passion was taken to the next level on a senior-year trip where she discovered easy access to high-quality tea in Japan—and she hasn’t looked back since.

In Japan, tea became a universal language for Purvis—she didn’t speak Japanese but easily connected with locals through tea. By random chance, she met a local matcha producer in Uji, Japan and by 2013, launched Mizuba as a way to source his artisan tea in the U.S.

“Uji could be compared to how Bordeaux is to France for wine,” says Purvis. “It’s the historic home of matcha and of the tea ceremony tradition.”

For Purvis, exploring the flavors of Japan’s matcha is a lot like wine tasting. From the flavor profiles and history of farming practices, she believes there is far more to learn about matcha than what you see trending on social media.

Setting themselves apart from its wellness-focused matcha competitors, Mizuba has a deep agricultural approach focusing primarily on the cultivars, harvest methods, and terroir of the tea.

“Mizuba’s mission and job is to steward the integrity of our farmers’ work all the way through for you to enjoy in your cup,” says Purvis. “Mizuba is a platform for our farms.”

Mizuba specializes in stone-milled matcha and heritage loose-leaf teas from four main producers in the Uji region. The company is committed toward organic and biodiverse production, along with sustainable shipping practices to ensure America’s beloved matcha habit remains eco-conscious.

Available online, Mizuba offers a variety of teas and products to make your at-home café experience run as smoothly as possible. Working directly with Japan’s most-awarded tea producer, Kiyoharu Tsuji, all products matcha have been Mizuba’s biggest hit.

“Our daily matcha is the best place to start if you’re a beginner,” says Purvis.

From there, the Mizuba site offers around a dozen more matcha powders to explore. Whether you are hoping to start your own matcha journey, or want to surprise your matcha-loving friend, choose your favorite matcha flavor and make it daily with the essential matcha tea set:
