These Hotels Are Decor Eye-Candy, According to Interior Designers

Palm Springs might be known for its mid-century buildings, but if you’re looking for something different, you’ll love the coziness of Sparrows Lodge. “It walks that fine line between comfort and an aesthetic of imperfection in the spaces,” says Leo Marmol, managing partner at Marmol Radziner. “The design vibe is casual luxury.” From wood-slotted walls in the guest rooms to the stone-stacked bar that flanks the Barn Kitchen, Sparrows Lodge oozes a beachy quality in the middle of the California desert. It’s that use of chill, natural elements that gives this hotel day-to-night appeal. “The breakfast in the morning is luxurious and delicious, and there is a family-style restaurant in the courtyard that is magical, dining outdoors under the twinkling lights in the landscaped garden,” Marmol adds. “The staff is always welcoming and accommodating.”

Tucked away in the heart of Oregon’s wine country, The Atticus provides lodging that appeals to all of the senses. “We love that its modern and chic decor blends seamlessly with the warm, inviting atmosphere found in every corner of this place,” says Oregon-based designer Carolyn Brazil. “We always recommend it to our friends visiting the area, and it is our go-to for overnights in the area. Those who are fortunate enough to stay here will be returning time and again.” The McMinnville accommodations deftly blur the line between shabby style and modern glam, thanks to its Luxury Bunkhouse and brass details throughout. It’s that healthy mix of comfort and chicness that makes it a solid spot to unwind with a glass of pinot noir from Willamette Valley.

Though 1 Hotel might have locations all around the world—spanning from London, to Brooklyn, to, of course, the West Coast—Linda Hayslett is a big fan of its West Hollywood outpost. According to the Los Angeles-based designer, this property excels in a “modern zen intention.” “The natural woods, living plants on walls, natural stone everywhere will make you feel like you’ve come for a retreat in the hustling world of Hollywood,” she says. “The aesthetic is calming and almost spa-like throughout from entry to the bedroom.” Of course, this property doesn’t just look good: It also smells incredible. Hayslett says: “Their candles smell so good that you’ll want to buy them, so your home smells like 1 Hotel all the time.”

Los Angeles is the “City of Stars,” and what better way to feel like the leading man or lady of your next big adventure than with a stay at Pendry West Hollywood, which was spruced up by acclaimed designer Martin Brudnizki? “From the moment you walk in the door you’re greeted by a large sculptural glass object that’s lit up,” Hayslett. “The luxury of the materials with dark velvets and gold throughout, makes Pendry the new Hollywood glam, in my opinion. And the dining and pool area on the roof with views of L.A. is a scene to not miss.”

Guests might be taken by the Cao Perrot’s towering stainless steel Swarovski tree in the lobby, which is dubbed “The Sunset Jewel,” but the hotel has more to offer than its dazzling first impression. The Pendry’s curated art collection continues with nearly 100 works from L.A.-local female artists like Kelly Brumfield Woods, Sarah Awad, and painterly space pieces by Pamela Jordan.

As Denver’s most historic hotel, The Oxford Hotel was designed by leading Colorado architect Frank E. Edbrooke, who also designed the Brown Palace. But while this lodge certainly comes with its rich history, it has serious design chops, too. “The Oxford has done a really good job of preserving the old and incorporating the new,” says Nadia Watts, an interior designer in Denver.  “Incorporating classic art and tile, the finishes look fresh despite their age.” 

Behind The Oxford’s classic brick façade on 17th Street, guests are welcomed into a grand lobby decorated with antiques, elegant furnishings, and the only hotel in the city with a fully-functioning wood-burning fireplace. Between the hotel’s extensive art collection and the Cruise Room, an Art Deco martini bar in the heart of the hotel, The Oxford strikes that sweet spot between storytelling and style.

If you follow Kelly Wearstler, there’s a good chance the Proper Hotels need no introduction. The acclaimed designer is responsible for giving four of its locations a ridiculously photogenic flair. However, the Santa Monica Proper takes the gold medal in the Golden State. “It’s designed with the intent of being cool, while fashionably posh,” Hayslett adds. “The interesting furniture, sculptural lighting, and unique artwork pieces makes this hotel a place to definitely check into when in Los Angeles. Even their drinks at the restaurant and bar make you feel that you’re with the cool kids.” 

So what makes this hotel so cool? Katie Lucas and Heather Browning of Lucas Browning Design say it all hangs in Wearstler’s clever use of materiality. “Guest rooms feature glossy tiles, tufted headboards, and bespoke botanical wallpaper that make us feel immersed in organic and elevated design in every corner,” the design duo says. To help bring the hotel’s bold-yet-breezy attitude, Wearstler tapped local artists like Morgan Peck, Bradley Duncan, and Len Klikunas.

Looking for some European inspiration in the heart of the Mile High City? Book a stay at The Ramble in downtown Denver. Here, the tall ceilings are deftly styled with leather furniture and chandelier light fixtures, harkening back to a Paris salon. “It does an exquisite job of mixing old and new, creating a vintage vibe that is both moody and exhilarating,” says Watts. “The Ramble strives to make you feel like you are staying in your own lovely pied-a-terre, but with room service! When you walk into the Ramble you feel like you are transported to a different time and place.” The rooms are equally impressive, Watts says, thanks to their rich wooden floors and antique rugs.

Right off the Golden State’s iconic CA-1 highway, with sweeping views of the rugged California coastline, Alila Ventana Big Sur is designed to feel like you’re smack dab in Mother Nature. (Because, technically, you are.) San Francisco-based design firm BraytonHughes Design Studios took on the design for the Big Sur hotspot, and its rustic refinement is adored by travel enthusiasts and industry insiders alike. “They pay a lot of attention to materiality, and I like that they didn’t simply make something modern and completely disregard context,” says Amanda Gunawan of Los Angeles firm OWIU Design. “It is very quintessential Californian with all of the redwood usage without being tacky. It also helps that it’s dog-friendly!” In addition to the stunning interiors, Gunawan is a fan of the gym, pool, and Japanese hot baths.
