Like so many small towns, Philipsburg struggled in the 1970s and ’80s, losing residents, businesses, and vital services. This once booming mining town seemed headed for the same fate as numerous nearby ghost towns. Instead, it turned around. Local business owners painted their exteriors in vibrant colors and planted flowers in abandoned planters, giving the historic main street an optimistic appearance. We salute the civic creativity and can-do spirit that make Philipsburg a fun place to visit and a model for reeling small towns everywhere.
