Our Designer Network is a group of trailblazers and icons that Sunset and sister publications Coastal Living and Southern Living work with to curate the best home designs for the magazines.

This week, we feature designer Jill Johnson of Waterleaf Interiors.

Sunset: How would you describe your style?

JJ: Clean, Timeless, and Classic with a hint of the unexpected

Sunset: What’s a design trend you’re loving right now?

JJ: My latest obsession is cement tiles. They can transform any ordinary space and make your home feel thoughtful and collected.

Sunset: What’s your #1 piece of design advice for homeowners?

JJ: I always tell my clients “function” is most important. While it’s important to have both form and function, design can always follow. Its important to be true to how you live.

Sunset: What are your (beach, mountain, lake, farm) house essentials?

JJ: An outdoor shower and a mud room are a must!

Sunset: What’s your go-to statement-making front door paint color?

JJ: Either Hale Navy or a classic Black lacquer

Sunset: Coastal/Southern/Western destination of choice?

JJ: I have a love affair with Punta Mita and that’s where I keep my boat so that’s hands down my favorite destination!

Sunset: Favorite places to shop?

JJ: Waterleaf Home & Gift, of course! And I just returned from Bali where I felt so inspired – so many cool little places with so much color. Their way of life and watching them balance so much was amazing to see.

Sunset: Favorite designers/tastemakers/etc. to follow on Instagram?

JJ: Lately I’ve been loving Becky Owens, Studio Blue, BoBridges, Bonfire Beach Kids, and Coastal Interiors

Sunset: Favorite hotels to stay in on the coast?

JJ: The Four Seasons Punta Mita and the Belmont El Encanto in Santa Barbara. It just remodeled and I love the outdoor dining and cottages…highly recommend!

Sunset: When it comes to (beach house) kitchens, what’s your preference: Island or peninsula?

JJ: If I have to choose, I’d say island 🙂
