From Marston's Restaurant, Pasadena, Calif.

On weekends, Pasadenans begin gathering outside half an hour before this homey restaurant opens its doors. No doubt some in line sustain themselves with thoughts of the hearty omelets and home fries with peppers and cheese, but I imagine most rose early for the sweeter offerings – macadamia nut, blueberry, or seven-grain pancakes and crispy, cornflake-coated French toast.

The thick slabs of sourdough take a while to cook, but, as owner Jim McCardy points out with a grin that is equal parts pleasure and surprise, nobody seems to mind waiting.
