The Deschutes River is one of the most prolific recreation waterways in the West. Along its 250+ mile journey from the Cascade Mountains north to the Columbia River—at river mile 52 to be exact—the Deschutes passes through the outdoor mecca of Maupin. With a history that counts range wars, railroad wars, and water wars among its claims to fame, the untamed waters of the Deschutes have consistently served as the lifeblood—and livelihood—of this historic community of fewer than 500 year-round residents. From whitewater rafting and fly fishing, to wildlife viewing and scenic beauty, the waters surrounding Maupin have been attracting visitors since long before the town’s official founding in 1922.
