How to Get There

Just two hours from Portland, Oregon and less than 10 miles from the popular coastal town of Cannon Beach, Short Sands is tucked deep in the forest and only accessible by a scenic trail. Don’t worry, surfers—the trail is short and sweet, even in flip-flops with a board under your arm. Accessible from the main parking lot along Route 101, the trailhead takes you on a half-a-mile long journey through the lush hardwood forest. Cross the rustic wooden suspension bridge to finish the hike and arrive at the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean surrounded by the volcanic basalt and sandstone cliffs.

The beach is popular among surfers, boogie-boarders, hikers, and beach goers alike. We recommend an early arrival, as the free parking spots fill up quickly—especially on a good surf day. Despite how busy it can get on warm summer days, Shorty’s long stretch of secluded sand leaves plenty of room to set up a quiet, and remote spot for the day no matter the crowd.

Surfing

While surfing is not a must, Shorty’s is a magnetic surf spot for both beginners and professionals alike. If you want to experience some of the most iconic waves of the West, it’s a must-hit on your bucket list. Typical of the PNW, ocean waters stay cold all year round, so make sure to bring a wetsuit—and booties for your feet—to stay warm even in the summer months.

Summer season brings waves from 1-5 feet on average, often drawing crowds of beginner and intermediate surfers looking to enjoy the smaller waves under the sun. Winter waves average around 10 feet or higher depending on the storm—and are full of pro surfers. Even if you’re not on the winter swell level, it’s worth a trip to watch the spectacle of surfers amongst the misty cliffs.

Check local surf forecasts on Surfline or Surf-forecast.com to check when the waves are fit for your level.
