While the South Shore of Lake Tahoe has earned a well-deserved reputation for its world-class winter sports, this stunning alpine region situated between Northern California and Nevada offers something unexpected beyond the slopes: being an unrivaled destination when it comes to wellness. In fact the region, which spans from the iconic Emerald Bay to Cave Rock, is one of the best spots in the West when it comes to indulging in a springtime reset. Verdant fields of wildflowers blanket the landscape, signaling a sense of renewal. Wintertime crowds thin, and there’s a sense of serenity and quiet. And relaxing forest baths call to those seeking nourishment at the start of a new season. Here are some of the best ways to rest and reset for the spring on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe:

Self-Care and Spas

Set against the backdrop of majestic mountains and the clear blue lake, the South Shore of Lake Tahoe is the ideal place to relax and rejuvenate after your winter hibernation. Opt for the time-honored Japanese tradition of cedar treatments at Tahoe Forest Baths, where you’ll do a detox via submerging in the tree’s purifying enzymatic bark. Or try out one of the very Instagram-worthy mobile saunas and cold plunges at Sierra Sauna Club, which can be rented and toted out to one of the picturesque vistas on the lake. If you’d rather have someone else sort out the details, book in for ultra-luxe resort spa treatments at Edgewood Tahoe, or a holistic wellness experience including acupuncture, bodywork, and infrared saunas at Elevate Wellness.

Healing Hikes

Blissfully sunny 300 days a year, with mountain peaks over 10,000 feet and some 72 miles of spectacular shoreline, there are outdoor activities for every skill level of explorer. Explore the backcountry along the Tahoe Rim Trail, spy wildflowers in the Tahoe Basin, or let someone else do the guiding via a photo tour with Tahoe Photography

As always, it’s important to remember to keep a low impact profile in these stunning destinations. Be sure to pack in and pack out your water bottles and trash, and opt for eco-friendly transportation like bikes or going on foot when you can. (But always stay on marked trails!) And if you see someone else’s trash, pick it up to leave the lake and surrounding area better than when you arrived. Being mindfully immersed in such an awe-inspiring natural destination is a win-win—for your next visit and for future generations. Retail Therapy

Because the South Shore straddles the border between Nevada and California, there’s great nearby gaming at the casino resorts, and incredible shopping at Heavenly Village. Check out some of the artisan wares at Wildwood Makers Market, or pop some tags at the local Tahoe Thrift. For global gifts and handmade clothing, stop by Gaialicious Boutique or Botanical Arts Company, a cozy cabin stocked with stunning houseplants and fine art.

Angle for Angling

There’s nothing more peaceful than being out on the water, and even better if you can be catching your own food to share with friends. The many streams, rivers, and alpine lakes offer both catch n’ release and catch n’ eat fishing options. Even if you don’t hook a big one, you’ll have memories to bring back long after you leave. Outfitters like Tahoe Sportfishing and Eagle Point can get you out on the water. Then do a hook-n-cook of your catch at McDuff’s. Or for a taste without having to reel ‘em in, visit Overland Meat and Seafood Supply.

Eat Clean

While there’s no shortage of ways to treat yourself on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, there are plenty of healthful options too. Think plant-based meals, farm-to-table fare, and bars that offer low- or no-ABV cocktails. Sprouts Cafe opened up as a hippie natural foods store and juice bar over 30 years ago, and has been serving up healthful, wholesome food to the community ever since. There are plenty of vegan and veggie options in town at spots like Freshies Ohana and Three Pines Coffee Company, the latter of which is known for whipping up the tastiest vegan and gluten-free waffles around. Adored for their whole rotisserie chickens and paleo-friendly fare, Verde makes delicious meals with sustainably-sourced proteins. Stop by for happy hour at Jimmy’s on the Lake, where the only thing more spectacular than the views are the thoughtful takes on non-alcoholic cocktails.
