Tucked away in southern region of the Puget Sound, right in the dip of Washington State, rests the small but mighty capital: Olympia, Washington. This city is a true hidden gem of the West Coast, with its stunning views of the Puget Sound shoreline, inconspicuous beaches, brilliant capitol campus, and standout dining.
There is a quiet but confident beauty in this little city, and the hometown pride runs deep for loyal locals. If you’re looking for a stop off the beaten path, it may be worthwhile to add Olympia to your next trip to the Pacific Northwest.

Where to Stay
In lieu of a luxury hotel, check into a charming bed and breakfast. Olympia is home to two particularly cozy B&Bs: The Marie and Swantown Inn. The Marie offers a sliver of Olympia’s history with its steep, asymmetrical Queen Anne-style architecture and impressive 134-year-long history. Don’t miss their locally sourced breakfast, which serves up freshly baked bread and ingredients from a variety of local vendors.
Swantown Inn is another sweet option with five PNW-themed rooms for your perfect stay. The Astoria is the largest of the five, complete with a fireplace and jacuzzi, and the Puget Suite can accommodate up to six guests. Stay for their buttermilk rhubarb coffee cake or mixed berry olive oil muffins.
What to Do
It’s hard to drive anywhere in Olympia without passing the Capitol Building at least once. This towering structure almost defies the modest view of the rest of the city. Stroll through the rose garden, partake in a professional tour, or simply roll down your window for a better view as you drive by.

If you’re traveling with kiddos, The Hands On Children’s Museum is a magical place to spend your day. Exhibits range from a mini farmers market and mock grocery store to water play stations and interactive art spaces, all designed to make learning feel like play. Even adults may find themselves wanting to get in on the fun.
Squaxin Park is worth a visit for woodland trails and short hikes, along with its outstretched rocky beach along the saltwater shore. Just a 10-minute drive north, Burfoot Park is another option for gorgeous sunsets and a sweeping view of the sound. Spot the Capitol Building on the horizon from each of these beaches and linger long enough to watch the sky change color.
After a visit to Burfoot, park nearby at Boston Harbor Marina for a break at their quaint dockside cafe. Grab some soft-serve and see if you can spot any seals lounging in the marina.

The Olympia Farmer’s Market rivals all others. Stop at a stand for a breakfast burrito, a plate of Indian curry, or perhaps just pick up a peach to go. Open year-round, this is the perfect place to grab breakfast or lunch with a live music background, or to have a palm reading if you’re curious about your future.
If you’re looking for a more upscale dining experience, Gardner’s is an award-winning restaurant hidden in an unassuming building by the waterfront. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and elegant and their local seafood is served fresh. Mixing up their classic fare, the Tapas Tuesday menu puts their own spin on traditional Spanish small plates. Favorites include their Salt and Vinegar Fritto Misto and Seasonal Risotto.

In search of street-style tacos and a crisp margarita instead? Dos Hermanos Mexican Kitchen is the spot, which you’ll find inside the artisanal 222 market. You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu, from their famous tacos to perfectly salted chips and guac. On your way out, don’t miss out on the creamiest gelato from Sofie’s Scoops.
Vic’s Pizzeria will satisfy cravings for pizza traditionalists and risk-takers alike. With three locations in town, each slice is made daily and delicious, from classic pepperoni to the Cape pie topped with chopped clams.
Where to Drink
For those wanting to imbibe like a local, Swing Wine Bar is best visited on a warmer day to sufficiently appreciate the view from the patio. Beyond the atmosphere, the bar features more than 15 original cocktails and an expansive wine list.
Labeled as a sports bar and grill, COVE elevates that definition with its sleek design and modern feel. Carve out time in your itinerary to experience their happy hour, where you can sip on the Strawberry Bliss Drop or a pear-forward gin and tonic.
The big cities of Washington State and the PNW are all noteworthy, but it’s the smaller cities like Olympia that define the state and make up its true beauty. A visit will invite you to slow down, take in the surroundings (both natural and architectural), and embrace the small town feel of this special capital.
