As far as we’re concerned, choosing a hotel for your next vacation is one of the most crucial tasks on your travel to-do list. (Dare we say it’s only second to selecting the destination) When you think about it, a hotel room is your temporary home: It’s where you sleep, shower, and snuggle up to stream your comfort show after a long day. There’s a lot that goes into finding the perfect accommodations for your next trip but—before you factor in style, amenities, or affordability—many travelers start their search with one question: Chain or boutique hotel?

The world is filled with properties from big-time hoteliers like Marriott or Hilton, yet some jetsetters prefer the coziness of a local boutique. According to Kristen Kellogg, co-founder of Salt & Wind Travel in California, both types of properties are having a moment in a post-pandemic world.

“There’s a heightened focus on quality, connection, and sustainability—areas where boutique hotels tend to shine,” she explains. “That said, chain hotels are evolving too, often creating sub-brands to cater to this demand for more personalized experiences.“

When it comes to choosing a larger franchise or a smaller boutique space, there really is no right answer: Each type of property has the potential to be an excellent home away from home, so it all boils down to personal preference. To help, here are a few questions to ask yourself before making the big decision.

1. Do I Prefer Culture or Convenience?

The first, and arguably most important, question you should ask yourself is whether or not you are okay with stepping outside of your comfort levels. “At boutique hotels, everything from the decor to the service is tailored to reflect the local culture and a unique point of view,” Kellogg shares. “Chain hotels tend to focus on consistency—you know what you’re getting, whether you’re in Los Angeles or Rome.”

While chain hotels aren’t exactly cookie-cutter—each location might have some differences in the design or cuisine—you can often rest easy knowing there will likely be a bunch of daily conveniences like reliable WiFi. “Familiarity can also be a comfort when you’re on the road for business or visiting a less familiar destination where predictability is key,” she adds.

Boutique hotels, on the other hand, can be a little risky since you don’t know what to expect; however, they can be rife with wonderful, unexpected experiences like cultural immersion programs, local cuisine, and great design. “One hotel I love for this is Ignacia Guest House, which was a private home turned boutique hotel in Mexico City,” she says.

2. How Much Do I Want to Spend?

Though boutique hotels may have more flexible but often higher rates due to limited inventory and personalized services, Kellogg says prices for chain hotels are often more standardized. “If you travel frequently, loyalty programs can translate into valuable perks like room upgrades, free nights, or access to exclusive lounges,” she adds.

But just because chain properties boast a lot of member rewards doesn’t mean you can’t score a great deal at a boutique hotel. In fact, with the help of a travel advisor, you might be able to snag some perks you wouldn’t be able to get on your own.

Boutique accommodations might be a higher investment, but Kellogg says these hotels often pay it back to their community, whether it’s through partnerships with local makers or sourcing farm-to-table ingredients. “Supporting these properties helps preserve the unique culture of a destination—a rewarding way to make your travel dollars truly count,” she explains.

3. What’s My Biggest Priority?

Price will always be an important factor to consider, but don’t let it have complete control over your vacation. “A hotel might be a ‘deal,’ but if it lacks the comfort, character, or amenities you desire, it will steal the sunshine from your trip,” Kellogg says. “Prioritize your travel goals—whether it’s luxury service, location, or a distinct ambiance—and invest accordingly.”

Before you reserve a room, think about what would make a hotel stay really magical. An ultra-soft bed that will give even the quickest cat nap a cloud-like experience? Chain hotels often use the same bedding and mattresses, so you’ll know what to expect. An endless bounty of delicious dining options? All-inclusive might be your best bet. High-end amenities like a spa or butler service?

4. Did Previous Guests Enjoy It?

Sure, choosing a hotel is an incredibly personal decision; however, it never hurts to see how a property stacks up against the competition. “Read recent reviews from sources you trust and double-check when they were written,” Kellogg recommends. “Or work with a travel advisor who matches your travel style and can help weigh with insider knowledge as well as the pros and cons of properties.” Remember that no property is perfect, so you are bound to see some less-than-stellar reviews; however, reading about previous experiences can offer a balanced picture of what to expect during your stay.

Plus, extra research can give anyone who’s staying at a boutique hotel for the first time some peace of mind. That way, you won’t sweat the small stuff and be able to truly enjoy your home away from home.
