California’s Most Iconic Highway Has Reopened. Here’s What to Do When You Go.
Highway 1 has officially reopened, connecting California’s most iconic stretch of coastline once more.
Thomas J. Story
After three years of rebuilding road infrastructure damaged by winter storms, Highway 1 through Big Sur has reopened ahead of schedule. The 6.8-mile stretch at Regent’s Slide has been closed to through-traffic as a result of heavy storms that triggered major slope failures and forced long-term repairs along one of California’s most scenic corridors. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the road is officially open as of today, January 14.
The reopening restores uninterrupted travel between Monterey County and San Luis Obispo County, reconnecting visitors with the region’s famed state parks, beaches, and overlooks. Access to places like Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Garrapata State Park remained possible during the closure, but required lengthy detours for some travelers. With Highway 1 back online, classic spring roadtrip moments become far easier to enjoy.
For anyone who’s been waiting to revisit Big Sur’s cliffs, coves, and redwood canyons, it marks the beginning of a significantly smoother journey. And for local businesses dependent on visitor travel, it’s a welcome return. Here are some of our favorite things worth stopping for along the way, including some newer options in the area.

Thomas J. Story
Pfeiffer Falls Trail
This moderate out-and-back hike in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, which was closed for several years due to fires, winds through redwoods to a graceful waterfall cascading over mossy rock. In spring, the trail feels especially alive, with rushing water, vibrant greenery, and cool shade under towering trees.
Solstice Supper Club
Tucked into the redwoods just south of Big Sur Village, the new Solstice restaurant is offering a weekend supper club experience for travelers. While their regular dinner service is paused for winter and slated to return in April, the Saturday night supper clubs are available now and can be booked in advance on Tock.
Post Ranch Inn Falconry
One of Big Sur’s most iconic experiences, Post Ranch Inn’s falconry program lets guests walk the cliffs with Harris’s hawks soaring overhead. It’s a rare, almost cinematic way to experience the landscape through an ancient partnership between humans and birds.
Spa at Alila Ventana Big Sur
Set among oak groves and coastal ridges, the onsen-style spa at Alila Ventana Big Sur is all about slowing down and tuning into the surroundings. Outdoor soaking tubs, forest-inspired treatments, and quiet views make it a perfect reset after a long, winding drive.
Treebones Omakase
Treebones, the Big Sur property that’s essentially a treehouse in the sky, brings an unexpected, intimate omakase experience to the backcountry, blending refined technique with a deep sense of place. The menu shifts with the seasons, making each visit feel like a one-night-only event worth planning a drive around. The Wild Coast Sushi Bar will be back open in February and is now accepting reservations.
