This Iconic Section of Highway 1 Will Finally Reopen This Summer
The section of PCH was closed due to the wildfires that impacted Malibu, Palisades, and Topanga.

In an effort to expedite the cleanup along Highway 1 in Malibu following the catastrophic fires, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced an all-hands effort to ready the state thoroughfare, allowing small businesses to reopen in time for peak summer tourism season. Crews are aiming to open up the highway to public travel by the end of May—a timeline that is well ahead of experts’ original predictions.
PCH is a major artery that serves hundreds of thousands of Angelenos and global visitors, connecting Los Angeles with Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and points north. It has been closed since January to everyone except for residents, essential businesses, and repair crews.
“We understand how essential this route is for daily life and local businesses,” Newson said in a press conference. “Reopening PCH is a top priority, and we are going all-in to get this done.”
The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and Caltrans are working closely with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to clear debris, demolish the damaged and collapsed homes, remove toxic ash and soot, repair the roadways, and install new utility equipment, making PCH operable once again.
It’s been estimated by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation that the wildfires have caused $250 to $275 billion in economic losses, making it one of the most costly natural disasters in US history. The fires led to significant property damage, infrastructure disruption, and business interruptions, impacting various sectors of the economy, including tourism and hospitality.
Still, many residents are hesitant about the expedited reopening, and are having reservations due to fears of further looting and security risks, as well as attracting visitors who may not be aware of the sensitivity of the ongoing recovery efforts. So if you’re planning on visiting this iconic stretch of coastline this summer and beyond, please remember to do so mindfully.
