Sequoia National Park is known for its oversize redwood trees and fantastical flora and fauna, but it might come as a surprise that there’s just as much wonder to be had underground. This summer, the National Parks System has announced Crystal Cave will reopen, allowing hikers to visit a subterranean wonderland that’s been closed off for the last four years. The park just reopened its reservation website, where visitors can make a booking to explore the caves with the Sequoia Parks Conservancy.

Crystal Cave is a breathtaking marble cavern located near Giant Forest and is known for having a particularly scenic approach marked by virgin forests of mixed stands of pines, firs, incense cedar, black oak, dogwood, and numerous low-growing species of flowering plants. The cave itself possesses notable geological drip features like stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, and flowstone. The marble formations were formed by limestone that was changed to its beautiful crystalline form by the intense heat and pressure it experienced during the mountain-making movements in the earth’s crust millions of years ago.

The required guided tour of Crystal Cave includes a half-mile round-trip hike with steep terrain and stairs. It’s worth noting that the cave environment is relatively chilly at around 50 degrees, plus it’s damp and dark, so it’s smart to pack at least a lightweight jacket. The trail is steep and relatively strenuous, with stairs equivalent to that of a 20-story building. Mobility should be taken into consideration and best practices with safety, as always, apply.
