Finding the right tent. Packing the right clothes. Remembering the sunscreen, bug spray, and (yes) whiskey for that crucial nightcap… A great camping trip starts long before you pull up to your campsite— it’s all about the preparation.

We did a lot of homework, planning, and testing before launching Camp Sunset, a two-night outing at California‘s gorgeous Big Basin Redwoods State Park and the basis of our May 2015 issue‘s cover story.

One of the most important details? Getting the right hiking boots—because what’s a campout without a little trekking and exploration?

Happy trails!
