At Bloomstock in San Francisco, they specialize in coffee and waffles year-round, but this spooky season they wanted to tackle the theme of the season head-on with an attempt at a black drink. After messing around in the kitchen with some activated charcoal they ended up with a delicious and not-too-sweet black lemonade.

To make this simple single-serving drink, start by making a quick simple syrup out of cane sugar and hot water before adding in activated charcoal and lemon juice, pour it over ice and top it with a splash of sparkling water. Ross, owner of Bloomstock, praises the drink as “a refreshing and bright mocktail during the usually hot and sweet fall drink line up.” So scoot over pumpkin spice latte, we’ll be taking our drinks over ice this season (maybe with a shot of tequila too).
