‘Yellowstone’ Is Returning for Its Final Season—Here’s How to Get the Look (Without Looking Cheesy)
Western wear experts share their tips to look great this fall and beyond.
2024 has undoubtedly been the year everyone went country. Wether it was Beyonce’s hit album Cowboy Carter or the much-anticipated return of the hit show Yellowstone, Western style has been everywhere from fashion week to pop-up line dancing parties at hot Hollywood nightclubs. It’s hard to argue that the costuming on the show didn’t play a role in the trend picking up steam. And with the premiere of the final season airing Sunday, Nov 10 on Paramount + and CBS, there’s no better time to use the show as source inspo for your fall wardrobe. But you want to do it right.
“Regardless of if you’re a ranch owner or ranch hand, the way you dress is important. Yellowstone gives respect to this aspect of ranch life and those that work on the ranches,” says Brandon Wise of the Wise Hatter, a bespoke hatter and milliner based in Venice, California. “The clothing they choose is fit to the scenes they have their characters in. The hats are well-made; the boots are specific to the individual jobs. When it’s winter, they dress them in the correct colors and style, and in the summer they do the same.”
We tapped both Wise and Stevi Hillman, Professional Barrel Racer for Durango—experts from varied sides of the industry—to share their top tips on how to get the authentic Yellowstone look this season and beyond. Here’s what they had to say:
Top it Off
The two most iconic cowboy pieces—hats and boots—are known as such for a reason. For both Wise and Hillman, it all starts with the hat. “The shape of the hat may be the most important thing. You can tell by how it’s shaped or what kind of hat it is if you’re an authentic cowgirl,” says Hillman. Having your hat on backwards and wearing boots that are not actually cowboy boots are a dead giveaway.
Choose Function over Form
“My number one tip for getting the Yellowstone look is to put together clothing that is specifically for function first, and fashion after—a sturdy pair of boots that have a little wear on them matched with a good pair of Wrangler style denim and a work shirt that tells the story of what you do,” Wise continues. “[You’ll want a] hat that isn’t fashion-based, but shows those around you that you mean business and aren’t afraid of a long day of work.”
Accessorize Wisely
Wise says the most important accessory to nail is the belt buckle. “A buckle tells a lot about what you do and what you’ve done in your life,” he says. Oftentimes buckles display rodeo titles or ranch logos, for instance. “The second would be a top-notch hat, and third would be a great pair of boots.” To the tune of what working folks on the ranch actually always have on them though, Hillman cites a great pocket knife as an essential. (Our personal favorite: the Leatherman Arc or Skeletool, which also make great holiday gifts. Just sayin’!)
Go Custom
Having a bespoke hat made at a shop like Wise Hatter is an experience and a true investment for a piece you’ll have for a lifetime. Not only is the hat sized to your head depending on where you want it to sit, but color, function, style, and personal needs are also considered. “A custom hat really is important when approaching the right look. It can either scream city or country,” says Wise. “When a custom tailored hat is worn, it shows the world you care about what you wear, but more importantly it shows that you aren’t playing a role and that you’ve invested into who you are and what makes you feel the best.”
Sync Your Color Scheme
“The accessories that matter most are the matching of your boots, belt, and hat band,” says Wise. Take into account the color of the leather, but also complementary colors as well.
Think Seasonal
“In the winter, darker colors (black, dark brown, gray) would be the best fit. A pair of black or dark brown boots; black or dark indigo pants; gray, white or black shirt; and a black or dark brown hat with a hat band that ties in with your boots and belt would be the best winter option,” says Wise. “As for the summer, lighter tans would be best for the boots, belt, and hat band, paired with light or dark denim, a white, light tan shirt, and a light tan (sand, camel, bone) colored hat.”
