This Denver House Will Transport You to the English Countryside
William Morris wallpaper and earthy tones make for an utterly charming space.

Why travel all the way to the English countryside when you can bring the English countryside to you? That was the idea behind this remodel for a family of four (a couple and their two daughters).

“The wife had always dreamed of a home reminiscent of the English countryside—cozy, inviting, and rich with history,” explains Katie Schroder, owner and lead designer of Atelier Design. “While the house was old, it lacked the antique charm they envisioned. Their goal was to create a space that felt authentic to its century-old roots while still being functional for modern family life.”

The four-bedroom, four bathroom house was a 100-year-old Tudor located in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood, so it already had some English flair. But the layout felt cramped, and practically every room (especially the kitchen and bathrooms) needed significant updates. There also wasn’t a dedicated home office for the clients, who wanted a space to retreat.

“They wanted to restore the home’s charm while improving its functionality,” Katie says. “Their vision was to enhance the existing architectural details, modernize the kitchen and bathrooms, and infuse the space with the warmth and character of a classic country house.”

The English countryside-inspired aesthetic became the foundation of the design. To enhance the home’s architectural character and add function, Katie and team added elegant archways between the living and dining areas, added a built-in window seat with bookshelves in the living room, and expanded the kitchen.

“To capture the essence of the English countryside, we incorporated an earthy, muted color palette, William Morris wallpaper in the dining room and primary bedroom, intricate wainscoting details in the main-level bathrooms, and a striking copper range hood in the kitchen,” says Katie.

The most dramatic transformation was the attic space. Originally dark and cramped, Katie and team transformed it into a cozy reading retreat with built-in bookshelves and a soft blue color-wash that gives the space an airy and intimate vibe.

The Tudor is now as charming on the inside as it is on the outside. It’s an ode to English design with modern amenities and features—the best of both worlds for the homeowners. And they couldn’t be happier, Katie says.

“The finished home reflects everything they envisioned—a perfect blend of timeless character, modern comfort, and thoughtful design,” she adds.
