These Design Trends Will Be Totally Outdated in 2026

“We continue to see a retreat from minimalist style defined by simplicity, clean lines, and the use of a generally white and natural toned palette,” says Emilie Munroe of Studio Munroe. “No longer are your area rug and throw color going to be your aesthetic pops of personality and color—entire walls and rooms will be layered with unexpected pattern and color combinations and marked by a mix of textures and materials.”

Harper Halprin and Aaron Leshtz of AAHA Studio say that if a space is minimalist, there needs to be some way to incorporate texture or color.

“The Instagram-and-Pinterest ‘formula’: white paint + white oak + black and gold metals, has officially run its course,” says interior designer Peggy Haddad. “It’s not that neutrals are bad—it’s that homes deserve more personality. People are ready for color, contrast, pattern, and soul again.”

“We no longer need to see kitchens with all-black metals, where plumbing fixtures, hardware, and lighting have matching finishes,” says Reanna Channer of Design to Elevate. “The desire for a collected, unique look is prevalent, and can only be achieved by incorporating a variety of wood tones and metal finishes. This layering adds depth, character, and personalization to a space.”

“Stark white with black metal accents: This is not only overdone, but feels cold and harsh on the eyes,” says Channer. “We are craving a softer, warmer color palette that brings comfort and a sense of ease to our interiors. As we move away from the shiplap fireplace facade, we expect to see a return to natural stone.”

“It feels a bit overwrought and the practical aspects of cleaning a space with fluted tile feels daunting,” says Clara Jung of Banner Day Interiors.

“What’s fading for 2026 is the use of black plumbing fixtures,” says Julie Beuerlein of JKB Home Design. “They read overly industrial and tend to date a space far too quickly. For fixtures, I always guide clients toward finishes with true longevity—polished chrome, nickel, or unlacquered brass. They’re classic for a reason, and they age with quiet grace.”

“Reeded cabinetry, vanities, furniture… you name it, it’s everywhere,” says interior designer Peggy Haddad. “A little is lovely, but the trend has been so oversaturated that it’s starting to feel expected. In moderation, it still adds texture, but in 2026, we’ll see people craving more variety and less carbon-copy design.”

The AAHA Studio team also sees the decline of the great room: “There is a return to segmented spaces, focus time, and grounded palettes.” 

“After a decade of ‘millennial grey,’ we are craving warmth in interiors,” says Channer. “Grey is unnatural for wood flooring (unless it’s weathered cedar on an exterior surface) and feels overdone. Instead we’re incorporating rich, earthy tones inspired by nature, such as olive greens, deep burgundy, amber and rust.”
