The biggest design motif of 2023 is definitely one with nature, adorable, quirky, and will add some playfulness to any room. The mushroom has entered the chat. Yes, fungi are trending in the home decor world, according to Pinterest’s 2023 Pinterest Predicts report, which looks at search data to forecast what will be trending in the future. And the social media platform seems to be the authority on trend predictions—for the last three years, 80% of the brand’s report predictions have come true.

The popularity of mushroom decor is linked to “weirdcore” design. “During lockdowns, people needed new ways to express themselves creatively without leaving home. So, they turned their bedrooms into creative havens and experimented with aesthetics like ‘weirdcore decor.’ This form of maximalist self-expression will only continue to rise in the year ahead,” the Pinterest report reads.

For a look into the data, Pinterest shared the mushroom-centric search terms that were emerging:

  • Fantasy mushroom art: +170%
  • Vintage mushroom decor: +35%
  • Funky house decor: +695%
  • Weirdcore bedroom: +540%
  • DIY mushroom decor: +77%
