Get The Cool Scandi Style of Danish Design Star HAY for Under $100

HAY there, Bay Area! The Danish design brand, on its way to becoming a household name in the States, opens its second California shop in Berkeley.

Christine Lennon

When the Danish design brand HAY was founded in 2002, their mission was to make capital D Design more accessible to a global market, and to update ideas about what Scandinavian design really is, which isn’t as pale and sterile as you may suspect. Husband/wife duo and founders Mette and Rolf Hay were committed to recruiting their generation’s best designers to create cool, useful, colorful products with a graphic punch.

Clean lines and crisp, saturated color define the Danish HAY look.

They expanded swiftly in Europe (their famous trapezoidal Kaleido trays designed by Clara von Zweigbergk became a favorite souvenir for a certain kind of American tourist in Europe, i.e., me) and are now creeping across the States, with two of their six newish U.S. retail locations located in California—one in Costa Mesa and the latest, which is now open in Berkeley.

On the design and affordability spectrum, they’ve landed somewhere between IKEA and Design Within Reach. You don’t have to wrestle endlessly with an Allen wrench to assemble their moderately priced products, but your wallet might take a bigger hit because of it. To celebrate the Berkeley store opening, we’ve picked six of our favorite design bargains from the brand—all under $100— including a downright cheerful electric kettle and a bathmat in a very of-the-moment color combo, lavender and cool sage-y green.
