Having spent the last 16 years of my doggo’s life on the road, I can say without question that there’s something undeniably magical about exploring with your pooch. Seeing how stoked they get at the smell of salt water on a fog-kissed beach or watching their joyful sprint into a brand new wide-open dog park is an instant dopamine hit. They’re truly the best companions, especially for travel, keeping things from getting too lonely, while also adding a point of entry for conversation with locals. Not to mention, having Bento around has incentivized me to get active and outdoors at least two times a day and explore new trails that I might not have on a solo trip.
Pet friendliness has rarely been an issue in my travels, especially out West. So it comes as no surprise that a recent study by LawnStarter revealed many of the best destinations for dog parks are right here in the West. Marked by an abundance of off-leash space, amenities, and dog-loving culture, these are the standout cities known for their parks.

Boise, Idaho
Topping the national rankings, Boise sets the gold standard for dog-friendly travel. Being a city that’s got such incredible access to the great outdoors, it should come as no surprise. One of note is Esther Simplot Park, which offers 55 acres of fishing, wading and swimming as well as plenty of off-leash space , all framed by views of the Boise foothills and easy access to the city’s beloved riverfront paths.
Portland, Oregon
Long known for its outdoor ethos, Portland earns high marks for both public and private dog parks. It’s common to see dogs running right alongside their trail running-obsessed owners. And at Sellwood Riverfront Park’s off-leash area, dogs splash in the Willamette River and roam grassy banks beneath towering cottonwoods, making it a favorite stop for locals and visitors alike.

San Francisco, California
Few cities pair iconic scenery with dog-friendly access quite like San Francisco. It’s almost a shock to meet someone who doesn’t have a four-legged family member. And with the ample parks in the city, there’s no shortage of places for them to play. Lafayette and Bernal Heights Park are a few local favorites offering expansive off-leash trails and sweeping views of the skyline and bay, where dogs roam freely across rolling hills while fog and sunlight drift in from the Pacific.
Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada
The Las Vegas metro area may be known for its nightlife, but nearby Henderson stands out in LawnStarter’s rankings for its well-designed dog parks. Heritage Bark Park features separate areas for large and small dogs, agility equipment, shaded seating, and splash pads—a thoughtful desert oasis for pups and their people during the heat peaks of the summer months.
Sacramento, California
With its relaxed pace and riverside setting, Sacramento rounds out the Western cities highlighted in the study. Sutter’s Landing Dog Park, set along the American River, offers a natural, unfussy environment where dogs can run off-leash near the water while humans enjoy scenic trails and quiet river views. Or better yet, have your pooch hop on a stand-up paddle board and float down the river with you—a favorite summertime activity for both people and their pups.
Colorado Springs, Colorado
Set against the dramatic backdrop of Pikes Peak, which is said to have inspired “America the Beautiful,” Colorado Springs earns top marks in LawnStarter’s study for its abundance of spacious, well-maintained outdoor spaces, which includes plenty for our canine companion. A local favorite is Bear Creek Dog Park, a massive off-leash area with winding trails, open fields, creek access, and jaw-dropping mountain views. The city gives dog-loving Denver a run for its money.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
With its sunny climate and wide-open landscapes, Albuquerque is an underrated city for many reasons—great food, proximity to nature, robust Native American roots, and a renowned live music scene. Dog lovers will be pleasantly surprised by its generous off-leash spaces and laid-back, pet-friendly vibe. North Domingo Baca Dog Park is a standout: a large, fully fenced space with shaded seating, agility features, and separate areas for big and small dogs. After a good romp, it’s easy to head toward Paseo del Bosque Trail along the Rio Grande for a mellow leash-on stroll beneath cottonwoods and big desert skies. The technicolored sunsets alone are worth the trip.
