If the 2026 Plant of the Year could predict the future, then hopefully 2026 will be a fortuitous one. 1-800-Flowers just named the Money Tree as its pick.
In addition to the Plant of the Year, 1-800 Flowers just released their Flower of the Year, the delphinium. The flower is representative of aspiration, hope, and better days ahead. The money tree is a perfect pair with the delphinium. In East Asian cultural traditions, the money tree is a symbol of prosperity and luck.
The money tree has a braided trunk, a representation of collective strength as opposed to individual. Its five-lobed leaves represent the five elements of balance in feng shui. The plant is also said to attract positive energy, perfect as we welcome the new year.

When cared for, the Money Tree can live and thrive for decades. Sunset Garden Editor Kristin Guy shared the following tips for ensuring the longevity of your plant:
- Light sweet spot: Bright, indirect light keeps a money tree happiest—think a few feet back from a south or east window. In hotter inland regions, shield it from harsh afternoon rays to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water with intention: Let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry out between waterings. Desert dwellers may need to water more frequently; coastal and mountain gardeners should ease off. Always empty saucers so roots don’t sit in water.
- Seasonal grooming: Rotate the pot monthly to keep the canopy even, and snip any leggy stems in spring to encourage that signature, full pom-pom top.
- Styling cue – lean into the braided trunk: Play up its sculptural shape by pairing it with a rounded or belly-shaped ceramic pot. For small spaces, tuck it beside a reading chair or entry console to add instant “calm energy” without feeling too mystical.
- Warm-weather vacations: When nights stay above 60°F, let it summer outdoors on a shaded patio. Just acclimate slowly so it doesn’t sunburn on day one.
