    North Rim, Grand Canyon

Sunset deputy editor Peter Fish loves this 90-site campground. “The North Rim,” he says, “has all the geological drama of the better-known South Rim—with more trees and fewer crowds. It offers easy access to the connoisseur’s view of the planet’s grandest canyon.” Take a mule ride along the canyon rim or hike the short Transept Trail. Or drive out to Point Imperial, which grants a terrific view of the canyon’s eastern half. Head back for a meal or drink at the limestone-and-timber Grand Canyon Lodge, a 1927 hotel that is, to some, even prettier than the South Rim landmark, El Tovar. $25/vehicle, $18/night.
