The idea of refreshing your old furniture may sound appealing, but the stripping, sanding, and priming it typically entails? Not so much. Thankfully, the Furniture Painting 101 classes at Peinture strike the right balance between work and play. Over the course of an afternoon, owner Deborah Waltz teaches aspiring DIYers the ins and outs of chalk painting—an easy-to-master method using an English brand of paint that doesn’t require any prep and sticks to almost every surface, from wood to brass to vinyl—and Waltz makes the toil fun. Working on their own chair or side table, students apply one or two coats of paint and then brush on clear wax for a shiny finish or dark wax for an aged patina. All supplies are included, and everyone leaves with a finished piece.
