A couple of weeks after Mama Shelter opened its first U.S. hotel in Hollywood, a guest got up on the lobby stage with his guitar and gave an impromptu, 20-minute concert. Surprising? Yes. But it was right in line with the international hotel chain’s reputation, says cofounder Benjamin Trigano. “People say we’re like an urban kibbutz—communal, friendly, and warm,” he says. The 70-room Mama Shelter Hollywood, designed by Thierry Gaugain, certainly promotes togetherness, with a foosball table and a photo booth in the lobby, plus a restaurant that focuses on comfort food, served family-style. “We’re not selling cool,” Trigano says. “We’re selling fun.”
