The First Friday art walk may have launched Roosevelt Row, but it’s scrappy start-ups like Lawn Gnome Publishing that keep the neighborhood in orbit. This indie bookstore/zine-publishing outfit opened via a Kickstarter campaign and has rapidly built a following of loyal Phoenix bookniks. Located in a converted 1930s bungalow, the shop carries self-published titles by local writers and poets, and hosts live music, open-mic nights, and poetry slams in the backyard—an almost-nightly revue of free expression that can get predictably intense. “I’ve seen people cry, open up, scream, everything,” says clerk Ariel Monet.
