Born as a San Francisco pop-up, Kronnerburger has grown to fill this chic Oakland space, its interior bedecked in stainless steel and marble, its menu a showcase of lusty California-Mediterranean cooking, built around ground beef on a bun. Chef Chris Kronner’s playful streak shines in starters like sweetbread piccata with lovage and olives, and king salmon tartare with nectarines and mint. But it’s hard to beat the basics of a well-flipped burger. Kronner’s arrive rare, with optional add-ons (crispy onion rings, fries topped with cheese curds and beef-cheek gravy) that are as good as any sides you’ll find.
