Kraken Congee has everything you need: reasonable prices, a cozy location, and congee, the warm, almost medicinal Chinese rice porridge that this underground spot serves in spades. Born from a pop-up that turned wildly successful, Kraken feels homespun, with red metal chairs that lend the place a touch of humor. With Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, and Korean influences, each congee bowl takes on a personality of its own, from pork belly adobo to nuoc cham–marinated flank steak. Don’t discount the small plates on the menu, which include “sticky icky fish sauce” chicken wings and “bang bang” shrimp pinch buns.
