Since opening in the spring of 2014 Harlowe has become a mainstay in the L.A. cocktail scene. Maybe that’s because it eschews gimmicks in favor of simple, expertly crafted cocktails, such as Warning Shot, an aromatic mix of 10-year-old single-malt whiskey and Chartreuse, maraschino, and peach liqueurs, along with menu classics like Old- Fashioneds and Moscow Mules served on tap. Or it could be the bar’s Golden Age glamour. Designer Bobby Green and his partners in the 1933 Group--whose other meticulously decorated watering holes include Sassafras and Thirsty Crow--explain that Harlowe’s look was inspired by a portrait of a 1930s socialite, which now hangs at the back of the bar. A marble-topped octagonal bar anchors the wallpapered space, lit by a dozen chandeliers and lined with chestnut booths salvaged from an 1800s soda fountain. They’ve cultivated an Old Hollywood vibe here and--if the steady weekend crowds are any indication--a growing roster of regulars too.
