Step aside, Cronuts. Donut Friend, a bright and cheerful eatery in the heart of Highland Park, is upping the ante in the pastry game. Its DIY Donut menu lets you create your own fantasy fried treat. You choose your favorite type (traditional or cake), filling (everything from fresh fruit to cheese), glaze (vanilla bean, lemon, chocolate, or maple), and toppings (chopped nuts, spices, sauces, candies, or bacon), and it’ll be made to order—fresh. (Our favorite concoction: a chocolate cake doughnut filled with Nutella, glazed with chocolate sauce, and topped with crushed Butterfingers.) The shop’s ready-to-eat creations are worth a taste too, particularly the Jets to Basil, filled with goat cheese, fresh strawberry jam, and basil, then topped with a decadent vanilla balsamic reduction.
