History runs deep at this state-of-the-art winery, where a renovated 19th-century farmhouse sits near prime acres of Paso Robles, California, vineyards. Sunset wine editor Sara Schneider says, “This is a Cadillac operation throughout.” The billionaire Swiss entrepreneur Hansjörg Wyss purchased the property in 2000. Halter Ranch offers a two- to three-hour tour in a restored 1984 Land Rover that takes you through its 281 acres of vineyards. Visitors can go up 1,200 feet to the highest point on the property and look out toward the mountains where Hearst Castle is hiding. You also stop at their ancestor tree, one of the largest living oaks in North America, and enjoy a glass of wine in its shade.
