Our Favorite Mac and Cheese Recipes

Creamy, hearty, and comforting, mac and cheese isn’t just for kids. Here are our favorite spins on the classic recipe.

Angela Brassinga

Macaroni and cheese, mac and cheese, The Mac—call it whatever you’d like, the classic recipe is a classic for a reason. It’s a must-have for weeknights, big family get-togethers, and camping trips. You can stick with the recipe you have always known (and probably memorized), or you can swap some of those simple ingredients for something new. Like wine.

That’s right, the first mac and cheese recipe below calls for gruyère, gouda, and white wine. Another of our favorites uses bacon for a rich flavor, or try out the Dungeness crab recipe to splurge on your next potluck.

Keep using your favorite type of pasta, experiment with some herbs, and enjoy some of our favorite mac and cheese recipes we’ve come across.

Ultimate Mac ‘n’ Cheese

Typically macaroni and cheese is made with milk but here we’re using wine instead. You’ll love the creamy fondue-like sauce that results. Buttery breadcrumbs add just the right amount of crunch.

One Pan Mac ‘n’ Cheese

We created this recipe with camping food in mind, but the one pan strategy is perfect for weeknight meals at home. For the latter, simply use a large deep frying pan for each step of the recipe. One pan means easy clean-up, and who doesn’t love that on a weeknight?

While Dungeness crab may seem like a splurge for a weeknight, when you add it to this family favorite a little goes a long way.

Grown-up Mac ‘n’ Cheese

In search of a mac and cheese with a sophisticated taste? Look no further. Three cheeses with decidedly adult flavor (gruyère, fontina, and parmesan) plus a little bacon will satisfy your grown-up craving for a childhood favorite.
