Our Designer Network is a group of trailblazers and icons that Sunset and sister publications Coastal Living and Southern Living work with to curate the best home designs for the magazines.

This week, we feature Interior Designer Soledad Alzaga, based in San Francisco.

Sunset: How would you describe your style?

SA: My style is best described as elegant, eclectic and functional

Sunset: What’s a design trend you’re loving right now?

SA: I am loving the chunkier, lower sofas with square arms. They look inviting and comfortable. And I am still in love with everything brass and gold!

Sunset: What’s your No. 1 piece of design advice for homeowners?

SA: Decorate your rooms for enjoyment. Life is too short to have a perfectly decorated living room where you can’t sit and relax and even get messy.

Sunset: What are your (beach, mountain, lake, farm) house essentials?

SA: Crisp, good quality bed linens, pillows and towels are essential for me for any house.

Sunset: What’s your go-to statement-making front door paint color?

SA: High gloss any color! Black, teal/turquoise or red are my favorites.

Sunset: Coastal/Southern/Western destination of choice?

SA: I love going to Los Angeles and New York whenever I have a chance. Any excuse will do.

Sunset: Favorite places to shop?

SA: In San francisco for furniture: Battersea, Coup d’etat, Black and Gold, Sue Fisher King, Stuff.  Online: Chairish, 1st Dibs and Craigslist are my go-to to find unique things.

Sunset: Favorite designers/tastemakers/etc. to follow on Instagram?

SA: Emily Henderson (@em_henderson), Becki Owens (@beckiowens), Rue magazine (@ruemagazine), Tinorenato photographer (@Tinorenato), Amber Lewis from Amber Interiors (@amberinteriors), Genevive Gorder (@genevivegorder), Sunset Magazine (@sunsetmag).

Sunset: When it comes to (beach house) kitchens, what’s your preference: Island or peninsula?

SA: My preference is an island. If it’s on casters, even better so you can move it around if you need to.
