The Fir Tree Cabin

Oregon Coast native Matthew Dakotah teamed up with mom Cheryl Shankel, sister Dani Weese, and childhood friend Lana Scott to transform a ho-hum cabin into the four-bedroom Fir Tree Airbnb (from $195)–a contemporary nature lover’s lodge layered with Pendleton fabrics, reclaimed woods, faux-fur textures, and leather accents. “It’s warm, layered minimalism with a rustic, modern vibe and a unique, collected feeling, even though the whole house was designed and furnished in one fell swoop,” says Dakotah.

Dining Hall

The dining call can accommodate ten guests at a handcrafted table of reclaimed wood flanked by custom upholstered benches. Colossal lanterns, flameless candles, original Pacific Northwest art, and a Marshall sound system set the stage. Dakotah added super-cushy upholstered benches for hours-long dinner parties and games by the fire.

Outdoor Lounge

Noting that their guests were drawn to alfresco chats by the fire even in colder temperatures, Dakotah and crew hatched a plan to extend the party outside. “I was first inspired by traditional Alpine huts and then set out to reimagine that classic mountain vernacular in a modern way,” says Dakotah. He tapped local builder Ismael Mejia to create an all-season structure featuring a Douglas fir timber frame and a 12-foot charcoal metal roof with metallic gold tongue-and-groove cedar.
