High above the desert of Palm Springs sits the site of the latest Sunset Idea House—a midcentury modern gem designed by the late Donald Wexler in partnership with Lance O’Donnell. The “undiscovered Wexler,” as some call it, embodies a clean-lined aesthetic that pays homage to the city. Because every design decision matters, the homeowner looked to Duravit for elevated bathroom solutions in this extraordinary home.

A Connection to Land and City

The surroundings of the Sunset Idea House inform its design, with architectural elements embracing the rocky desert terrain and expansive views—decisions made by the trailblazing Wexler, who posthumously holds an iconic place in historical architecture.

Duravit takes a parallel approach. Born 200 years ago in the Black Forest region of southwest Germany, the revered company first created pottery and ceramics using materials tied to its natural environment. This craftsmanship eventually led the company to develop bathroom fixtures and accessories.

Today, Duravit is known for meticulous details that elevate any bathroom to a beautiful yet functional space. This attention speaks to the company’s numerous design awards and its storied collaborations with some of the world’s most notable designers, including Philippe Starck and Studio F.A. Porsche.

Elevating the Bath in a Midcentury Gem

Duravit sees the bathroom as a home’s anchor. It holds this ethos paramount with products to fit every lifestyle, including statement-making essentials—sinks, toilets, faucets, furniture, and fixtures—and a range of accessories.

The homeowner chose products from several collections to take advantage of the company’s vast offering. Each of the five bathrooms in the Sunset Idea House will feature bathroom accessories from the Starck T collection designed by Philippe Starck.

From there, the different bathrooms host a unique assortment of Duravit products. A stunning wall-mounted vanity with a black glass front, DuraCeram® vessel sink, and a feature-rich lighted mirror from the Zencha collection bring a harmony of shapes and finishes to the powder room. Sebastian Herkner designed this series, pulling inspiration from a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

The larger of the two primary bathrooms features a stunning freestanding bathtub from the Aurena collection and the newest addition to Duravit’s SensoWash® offering, the SensoWash® i PRO integrated bidet toilet.  With features like seat heating, night light, odor extraction, and control through remote or app options, this toilet truly upgrades everyday experiences.

Duravit’s Aurena collection, a series designed by Antonio Citterio to reflect the perfect proportions and precise contours of the golden ratio design principle, is also featured in the second primary bathroom. The Aurena double console provides ample space for self-care, while matte white sinks featuring Duravit’s 2-in-1 protective glaze DuraShield® offer utility and modern industrial style.

Both guest bathrooms have an oak terra vanity, lighted mirror, and toilet from the Qatego series. Duravit and Studio F. A. Porsche created this bathroom collection to radiate a natural feel and echo the look of smooth stones worn by water.

Design That Goes Beyond

Duravit also mirrors the Sunset Idea House’s thermal efficiency and eco-friendly materials with its focus on sustainability and the use of regenerative resources.

These details upgrade the bathrooms—and the entire home—to a place of meaning and beauty, enhancing everyday life with brilliant design.
