Freshen up Your Holiday Table with a DIY Spread That’s Stylish and Sustainable

Setting a stylish yet sustainable table for the holidays can be intimidating. But, if you’re looking to impress while keeping the planet in mind, it’s non-negotiable.

That’s why we reached out to the co-founders of Atelier Saucier. For their line of home entertaining accessories, Staci Inspektor and Nikki Reed rescue and repurpose fabrics in downtown Los Angeles, then transform them into charming napkins, table runners, and more.

“Entertaining can often feel intimidating and overwhelming, when it really should be low-lift, fun, and an expression of the host!” the pair says. “We love mixing and matching linens and tableware to create a totally unique and personalized tablescape.”

The duo gave us several tablescape tips for the holiday season, starting with a simple yet important one to remember: Have fun.

“We are obsessed with reclaimed textiles and hard-to-find fabrics including luxe linens, rich cottons, fresh denims, and sumptuous chambrays,” the duo writes on their website. “Think heirloom-quality materials that wash and wear like a dream–just like your favorite pair of jeans.” 

With some help from their sustainably sourced line of one-of-a-kind linens, which are also customizable and range from cocktail napkins to placemats and more, you can put together a beautiful spread that not only looks good—but that you can feel good about, too. In addition to their small-batch process of sourcing and creation, a portion of every Atelier Saucier purchase goes to Los Angeles organizations who are benefiting food and wellness initiatives.

Layer Your Linens

“Layer, layer, layer,” say the Atelier Saucier duo. It all starts with a strong textile foundation.

For a recently styled table, Inspektor and Reed started with their modern Dark Denim Runner. Then, they flipped over a reversible Candy Stripe Placemat for a more muted white hue perfect for pairing with handcrafted Vietri plates and Mepra cutlery.

They added Blush Linen Cocktail Napkins “to colorfully ground” glasses from Fortessa. Rainbow Burlap napkins brought a shade of cream but with an array of rainbow-colored trims.

“Try placing a tea towel underneath shared dishes and serveware to add extra textural moments,” the pair says. “Tea towels also look beautiful tied around chilled wine bottles or as a wrap for a warm loaf of bread.”

Dine with Seasonal Design

Incorporate local produce into your tablescape.

“A trip to the farmers’ market or local grocer is the perfect way to sustainably stock up on in-season fruits, veggies, and florals to use as centerpiece decor,” the duo says. “Don’t be shy to make bold and visually appealing selections that speak to the season, cuisine, or theme of your meal.”

If you’re preparing a fall table, the pair recommends bright yellow squash blossoms, ghost peppers, and multi-colored cranberry beans. Add flowers with “colorful hues and rich greenery,” they say.

Lean in to Flower Power

“When you come across a unique or funky floral variety that makes you take a second look, go for it! You won’t regret it,” the pair adds. “Try to keep the majority of your floral arrangements in smaller bud vases so guests are able to see one another and converse with ease across the table.”

Don’t own enough vases? Not to worry. “Start cutting and layering the florals directly on top of the table,” say Inspektor and Reed. “Make sure to soak the short stems in water for a few minutes before laying them out so that they don’t wither during your meal.”

Add Candles

For final touches, the Atelier Saucier co-founders co-mingled a Flamingo Estate candle with a Juliska vase.

When it comes to candles, “always choose unscented for meal time!” the pair recommends. “You don’t want the fragrance to mix with or interfere with the delicious aromas permeating throughout your space.”

And with that, you’ll have a holiday table that’s oh-so-fresh but oh-so-function. All that’s left to do is cheers!
