What do you do when you’re a graduate student of design and need to climb a tree? Dream up the coolest modular step system ever!

Robert McIntyre and Thor ter Kulve, graduate students of the Royal College of Art schemed up a system of spiraled steps that wrap and around and attach to any tree with no  tools. CanopyStair is made from a cast aluminum tripod frame, wooden platforms, ratchets strap to fasten the steps into place, and even a handrail.

The twosome worked with arborists to ensure that their neoprene-edged steps make for soft contact points with the tree, ensuring no damage. These stairs are the stuff dreams are made of—allowing anyone to explore the canopy of trees. We think some of our favorite treehouse getaways should get their hands on a set of CanopyStair!

The team gives a special shoutout to Haworth Thompkins Architects for sponsoring the installation. Bravo, fellas!
