Sunset Eat Fresh, Day 3: Who needs sugar when you can’t breathe?

My biggest challenge: Got sick. Big time sick—upper respiratory cold with asthma involvement. Sickest I've been in years. I-want-my-mama sick. Googling-whether-or-not-you-can-die-from-drowning-in-your-own-mucus sick (you can).

Not sugar-free Halls. Look, I’ve already gone through two bags of Ricola, and I felt like bringing out the big guns. Don’t judge me when I’m sick.

Who: Johanna Silver, associate garden editor

I’m giving up: Sugar.

I chose this because: See my last post. Addiction.

My biggest challenge: Got sick. Big time sick—upper respiratory cold with asthma involvement. Sickest I’ve been in years. I-want-my-mama sick. Googling-whether-or-not-you-can-die-from-drowning-in-your-own-mucous sick (you can).

My biggest temptation to cheat: Temptation has come in two forms: Honey (I guess it’s not really temptation if I’m adding it to tea with abandon) and the decision whether to pick the sugar-free lozenges (umm…. I didn’t).

Coping mechanisms: Illness has been a blessing in disguise! I’m on a diet of chicken soup and citrus. No refined sugar here! Seriously! This is probably the littlest sugar I’ve eaten in years!

Today I feel: Terrible. As soon as I hit publish, I’m headed to my stove to hold my head over a steaming pot of water. But I guess that has nothing to do with sugar detox.
