If you liked Richard Betts’ Essential Scratch & Sniff Guide to Becoming a Wine Expert, which we featured in the February 2014 issue of Sunset, you owe it to yourself to check out the Boulder-based writer‘s latest book, The Essential Scratch & Sniff Guide to Becoming a Whiskey Know-It-All (due out Oct. 6; $22; Houghton Mifflin).

After all, more and more Western distillers (and even a few breweries, such as San Francisco’s venerable Anchor Brewing) are testing the whiskey waters, to garble a metaphor. Also, illustrator Wendy MacNaughton returns (along with Betts’ collaborator Crystal English Sacca), which means clever drawings and a darn-near comprehensive Wheel o’ Whiskey.
