One more reason to love Portland: It has a chicken tour!

Every summer, chicken-owners in Portland open up their yards to the public. It’s called Tour de Coops and happens in July. Even more amazing, it’s been going on for SEVEN YEARS.

If you go, you can enter to win one of two handsome little coops–“made by local coop designers.” What kind of city would have plural coop designers? Portland!

Here’s one of them.

“The Garden Ark,” by John Carr Notice the little wheels at the back–this baby is for steering your chickens into that bug-infested spot in your garden. As they peck happily away at the pests, they contribute fertilizer to their little patch. Win-win.

You can build the Ark yourself with plans from John Carr’s website—for about $20.
