Take a hike. The National Park Service leads regular hikes through the park. You can get a schedule online (nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/events.htm) or at Kilauea Visitor Center. Other guided hiking options include the Kilauea hikes led by Hawaii Forest & Trail (hawaii-forest.com).

Striking plant life you’ll discover on a hike or bike ride in the park

Ride a bike. See the park on two wheels on BikeVolcano’s bike tours (bikevolcano.com). Options include a 3-hour tour of the summit, a 5-hour park tour and wine tasting adventure, and a 7-hour sunset tour to the lava viewing area just east of the park.

Stroll Volcano Village. Amazingly verdant and peaceful given its volcanic setting, Volcano Village holds some good arts and crafts galleries—we like Volcano Art Center (volcanoartcenter.org) and Volcano Garden Arts (volcanogardenarts.com)—and a scattering of places to stay and eat. There’s also a good Sunday morning farmers’ market (volcanogallery.com/volcano_farmers.htm).
