Cascade Locks, OR
Tunnel Falls. Walk 6 miles up Eagle Creek Trail to the hikers' tunnel, blasted out of the basalt, behind Tunnel Falls. From I-84 east, take exit 41; follow signs to Eagle Creek Trailhead. Northwest Forest Pass $5 per vehicle. Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, 541/308-1700.

Cascade Locks, OR
Upper Horsetail Falls. It's a 0.5-mile walk from the base of 176-foot Horsetail Falls to the cavelike cleft in the rock behind Upper Horsetail Falls. From I-84, take exit 35; drive 1.5 miles west on Historic Columbia River Hwy. Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area (above).

Cottage Grove, OR
Upper Trestle Creek Falls. One mile of uphill hiking puts you behind the falls cascading off a rock cliff. About 25 miles from Cottage Grove; call for directions. Cottage Grove Ranger District, www.fs.fed.us/r6/umpqua or 541/767-5000.

Portland
Ira C. Keller Memorial Fountain. Among the urban faux water-falls in this fountain is one you can step behind, peering out at the auditorium through a curtain of water. Facing Keller Auditorium, S.W. Third Ave. between Market and Clay Streets.

Silverton, OR
Silver Falls waterfalls. Walk behind four falls and past seven more on a 7.5-mile loop hike, or take short walks to each from the South Falls day-use area. 26 miles east of Salem on State 214. $3 per vehicle. Silver Falls State Park, 503/873-8681.
