Call ahead to reserve a space and then head out to the Palatki Heritage Site, 16 miles west of Sedona in Coconino National Forest to see the remains of structures that date back nearly 900 years. The real attraction, however, is the distinctive painted pictographs from every native culture that inhabited the Verde Valley, including animal figures that eventually turned black as soot from cooking fires adhered to the pigment.
