Olea Hotel

Glen Ellen, California

Back in the early 1900s, when just getting to Glen Ellen from San Francisco involved ferries, trains, and buses, French couple Adolphie and Anastacie Larigne ran a boarding house for city residents escaping the fog for weeks on end. Today, the 12-room Olea Hotel is a mere 90-minute drive up 101. The bedrooms are quite a bit plusher now: duvets, down pillows, heated bathroom floors. But you still have plenty of opportunities to meet your fellow guests--at breakfast (lemon ricotta pancakes with basil syrup), over the wine and olives set out each afternoon, at the nightly dessert tasting, or out on the hillside patio, shaded by live oaks and overlooking Sonoma Mountain.
