Lafayette Park

San Francisco, California

Until now, Lafayette Park, perched on a Pacific Heights hilltop, has never seemed as welcoming as Alta Plaza Park or Alamo Square. Maybe it was the rushing traffic on Gough that sweeps past its eastern edge (“don’t slow down—nothing to see here!”). But now, after millions of dollars in renovations, and a few last-minute NIMBY-ish lawsuits, Lafayette Park has rolled out the red carpet. Or, more precisely, a shaded meadow with amphitheater seating, appropriately unthirsty plantings (lavender, yarrow), a paradise of a playground for the kids (complete with a manmade water feature), and, at the crest of the hill, benches positioned for a view of Alcatraz and the bay.
