San Francisco, California

Valencia Street, the city’s hottest corridor for dining and shopping, has never had much in the way of live entertainment. Now, with the opening of the Chapel, it has a full-fledged music venue. Inspired in part by New Orleans’s legendary Preservation Hall, the century-old Tudor-style building—and onetime mortuary—soars with curved wood beams and an A-frame ceiling that give the room’s acoustics a warm, friendly sound. The low-slung stage is close enough so you can hear, say, Elvis Costello tune his guitar between songs. The man behind the bandstand is restaurateur Jack Knowles (of Oakland’s À Côté), who delivers a full NOLA-leaning menu and beefed-up wine list.
