Elena Gonzalez, a weaver from Teotitlán del Valle, Mexico, brings her artistry to the Catto Center at Toklat each summer. Gonzalez creates colorful rugs on a traditional loom using wool that she and her family have carded, spun, and dyed back in her hometown. Stop in to watch as Gonzalez carries on the ancient Zapotec tradition. The word toklat means “head-waters” in Inuit, and the center, a gathering space for artists and environmental thinkers, sits near the source of Castle Creek. After inspecting the weaving, join one of the center’s naturalists for a (paid) easy guided hike and lunch at the acclaimed Pine Creek Cookhouse.
